Ben Rocke Henderson

About Ben
Ben’s work aims to depict the intangible; queries that cannot be touched but rather, thought of. His abstractions emphasize depth in color, shape, and space. Working on a larger scale, Ben uses movement to provide rhythmic gestures which serve as outlines for his thoughts and emotions. A balance between risk and solace, his coloration expands upon his outline to achieve abstract expression that is both individualized and impressionistic.
Artist Statement
The interplay of existentialism, abstract expressionism, and my Afro-Caribbean heritage is at the core of my artistic practice, forging a multifaceted exploration of the intricate layers of human existence that transcend temporal, spatial, and cultural boundaries.
Existentialism, as a philosophical framework, serves as the intellectual foundation upon which my creative endeavors unfold. Rooted in profound inquiries into the nature of individuality and the search for meaning in life, my artistic expression seeks to unravel the intricacies of human existence. Engaging with the existentialist notion of freedom of choice and the consequential responsibility it entails, I embark upon an artistic journey that explores the depths of the human psyche. My works strive to capture universal human experiences of yearning, vulnerability, and introspection, evoking a profound resonance within viewers, prompting introspection and contemplation.
Drawing inspiration from the spontaneous and emotive qualities of abstract expressionism, my artistic process becomes a visual— through which inner thoughts, emotions, and memories find their tangible form. Guided by intuition, I embark on an exchange with artistic materials, allowing colors, textures, and gestures to manifest what words often fail to encapsulate. The act of painting becomes a cathartic endeavor, an avenue through which I navigate the expansive realm of emotions and sensations that constitute the tapestry of our shared humanity.
Deeply rooted in my Afro-Caribbean heritage, my artistic practice serves as a testament to the rich cultural history within my family. Celebrating the vibrant traditions of my heritage, I draw upon the symbolic motifs, rhythmic cadences, and hues that adorn Afro-Caribbean artistic expressions. Synthesizing these elements with abstract forms, my work becomes a bridge that spans the chasm between the past and the present. At the center of my cultural pride is an insecurity; one that questions my belonging. In my work I often find myself wrestling with these feelings of being insufficient; creating a visual of inner conflict.
Ultimately, my artistic trajectory serves as an intellectual and emotional quest to unravel the intricacies and paradoxes inherent in the human condition. By interweaving the threads of existentialism, abstract expressionism, and my Afro-Caribbean heritage, I endeavor to construct a visual experience that transcends cultural confines, resonating with viewers on both a deeply personal and universal level. My art seeks to inspire contemplation, dialogue, and a profound connection to the human experience that unifies us all.
